It's not like anybody pays us for this shit right? Happy New Year though. Hope the holidays were fantastic for you. I enter the New Year with a question... Do I hate Boston Celtics? or should I love them since KG is one of the best and has been working his ass off for years to get where he potentially could go now. It took thirty games, but I think they might be legit contenders. That statement including a might is silly since they are 27-3. They lose once every ten games; check the math 9-1 on wins and losses.Last year they would have lost to the Washington Generals on a good day. I am confused because hating big market teams when they are good is obligatory if you do not reside in the that area, but I really like Allen, Pierce, and Garnett. I have watched them all since the beginning of their careers and now they are all on a team that I know I should dislike if they are good. I don't have problem hating the Patriots even though I don't care about the NFL that much. The Red Sox are the new Yankees in most ways, though baseball matters about as much as hockey after a strike and the steroids bullshit. Only one player of note escapes scrutiny in the period preceding us in baseball, and that is Griffey, Jr. He escapes scrutiny because he has aged normally. Back to the issue at hand though, you have to root against NY, LA, Boston, and maybe Chicago if you are not from one of these places. I give a maybe to Chicago beacause I really like the place and hated the Bulls only because I was the only person in America waiting for 23 to lose. He had to leave before the Dream could get a portion of his due. Should I hate the Celtics, they seem to me too Jerry Bruckheimer with the 3 superstars and a rehashed nickname, but then again I did like the Transformers movie... I am beginning to wonder where the foundations for my beliefs have gone. A soft spot for Pierce is there because of Big 12 affiliations and the way he gunned when the Celtics were hopeless. Allen has never been threatening and plays the game the right way. KG is KG, and there is not any reason to discuss wishing this man the best on the court if you actually like basketball. I still feel like slime rooting for the Celts though. Tommy Heinshon makes it worse. So does Bill Walton. So does anyone who refers to the new team as the big 3. I don't know if it is enough for me to want to see them lose though. This is starting to feel like a dear Abbey letter. Anyway, this is the Captain signing off for now... Throughout this last week I"ve managed to temper the movies with my ongoing Proust-reading project, which has forced me involuntarily to compare everything else I read, see or hear with In Search of Lost Time. How does a seven-volume novel about life in France at the close of the nineteenth century compare to today"s hottest blockbusters? I have no idea. But that hasn"t stopped me from writing about it. Or has it? Live Free or Die Hard: Bruce Willis stops sheriff-turned-cybergenius Seth Bullock from bringing America to its knees. If you?ve watched HBO?s Deadwood, you can see the rage constantly being stoked in the furnace of Sheriff Seth Bullock?s eyes. It?s no surprise that he finally traveled in time to the twenty-first century and launched a computerized attack on the infrastructure of the USA. It?s the revenge of the wild past on the complacent village of the present. Fortunately, aging movie star Bruce Willis is wise to Bullock?s ways, teaming up with the I?m A Mac guy to outcool Bullock?s old-timey mannerisms. Against vast odds they triumph, although they lose the obscenity-spewing contest. Resemblance to Proust Past: Tenacity. Marcel Proust spent the final years of his life in his cork-lined bedroom, patiently writing his 3,500 page opus that would eventually become the towering work of literary modernity. Not even The Great War could stop him. In LFoDH, Willis takes down a Harrier plane, at least one helicopter, scores of cars, several French bad guys, and one Asian kickmaster chick. Transformers: In every adult?s worst nightmare, the toys that they grudgingly bought for their screaming spawn turn out to be gigantic sentient robots. They speechify, they fight, they die, they turn into eighteen wheelers. There are always multiple considerations in the adaptation of a line of toys to a screen franchise, but the chief one must be How do we make not this not achingly stupid? For example, why would a bunch of alien robots from outer space look like Camaros and Mack trucks? In the highly plastic imaginative landscape of children, this poses no problem. But in a live-action movie, some of the plastic elements have to settle into a fixed shape. In the explanation, or explanations, provided ? there seem to be at least three reasons given for the Transformer?s resemblance to Earth technology ? Bay ends up exploring the affinity that we have for machines and the way in which we build anthropomorphic elements into the technology that we use every day. The Transformers movie is ridiculous ? would you take aliens with names like Bumblebee and Jazz seriously? ? but part of the reason for its success stems from the fact that we envision autonomous forms in our machines and long for their emergence. Resemblance to Proust Past: Like Michael Bay, Marcel Proust understood the complex relationship between humans and their artifacts, and the process by which we imbue our art and architecture with human qualities, and how those qualities in turn influence and shape subsequent generations. As far as I know, Proust did not mention gigantic transforming robots in any of his finished manuscripts, but early drafts of Swann?s Way refer repeatedly to the narrator?s friendship with Optimus Prime. Ratatouille: Ratatouille is a movie about a rat who wants to be a chef, who, through a series of unlikely circumstances, gets his shot. Ratatouille and Transformers pretty much prove that computer animation is folding the live-action film and the cartoon into one form. Transformers is a live-action film featuring characters and scenes executed almost entirely on a computer; Ratatouille is a cartoon with surfaces and textures so realistic that you sometimes forget, despite the presence of talking rats, that you?re watching animation. Similarly, Ratatouille?s preoccupations, about artistic production versus consumption and the function of criticism, shoot miles higher than the airy speeches about Freedom in Transformers. Resemblance to Proust Past: Bodies of art tend to reduce to a small collection of images and lines, and usually not very representative or accurate ones. Our memory of Casablanca is chiefly anchored to an image of two men walking into the night on a Moroccan airfield and the mangled line ?Play it again, Sam?. Leonardo da Vinci?s monster corpus is now a small dark painting of a woman with an ambiguous smile. In the case of Proust, the entirety of ISOLT is remembered for a single scene at the close of the first chapter, in which the taste of a madeleine cookie dunked in tea brings on a spasm of involuntary memory, which is Proust?s term for a specific kind of memory that recollects and resurrects a place and time long gone, bringing it so forcefully into being that it slams aside the present, if only briefly. Behold: And once I had recognized the taste of the crumb of madeleine soaked in her decoction of lime-flowers which my aunt used to give me? immediately the old grey house upon the street, where her room was, rose up like the scenery of a theatre to attach itself to the little pavilion, opening on to the garden, which had been built out behind it for my parents? and with the house the town, from morning to night and in all weathers, the Square where I was sent before luncheon, the streets along which I used to run errands, the country roads we took when it was fine. And just as the Japanese amuse themselves by filling a porcelain bowl with water and steeping in it little crumbs of paper which until then are without character or form, but, the moment they become wet, stretch themselves and bend, take on colour and distinctive shape, become flowers or houses or people, permanent and recognisable, so in that moment all the flowers in our garden and in M. Swann's park, and the water-lilies on the Vivonne and the good folk of the village and their little dwellings and the parish church and the whole of Combray and of its surroundings, taking their proper shapes and growing solid, sprang into being, town and gardens alike, from my cup of tea. It?s a longie but a goodie. You read the whole passage because we"re such good friends, you and I. To discuss the madeleine moment in Ratatouille would spoil much of the fun that the viewer experiences in getting there, but suffice it to say that taste and memory intersect at the climax of the film. And besides, the movie's set in France. That's all Proustian and stuff. ![]() ![]() February 02 Win Transformers Movie TicketsWith all the excitement around the Transformers Movie, and I have seen it so I know the excitement is warranted, there are many promotions and movie tie ins. I have found a program where you can participate and get yourself 6 free passes to see the movie. I would love to see the movie again and I have already seen it twice. So for me seeing it 6 more times is well worth it. Yes, I will most likely see it at least 6 more times in the theater, I have friends and family who want to see this movie with me just to see the childlike wonder in my eyes when Optimus Prime rolls on up. This weekend for me has been all about Transformers, today I went to the Hasbro headquarters and toured the facility, I learned many things about the behind the scenes stuff about getting the Transformers Movie made for the big screen. So if you Want six passes for the new Transformers movie" Participate now. The movie is so worth seeing and you have to see it on the big screen to really appreciate the magnitude of this movie's awesomeness. You will not be disappointed. This week has been great especially for a Transformers Fan. In addition to seeing the movie I also got photographed for the local newspaper. I got to take out my entire collection of Transformers and all this past week my Photo-A-Day subjects have been Transformer related. I even picked up the Transformers video game for the Nintendo Wii.
![]() ![]() What's going to happen on 1-18-08?J.J. Abrams, the guy behind Lost and Alias and MI: 3, is heading to the big screen again, producing a movie called ... well ... it doesn't really have a name. It has a codename - Cloverfield - and a release data of 1-18-08. So what's the big deal about the movie" Its trailer appeared before the Transformers movie when it was released earlier this month, and it has gotten tons of viral buzz over the web because the movie's website, posting at IMDB.com, even the trailer itself, tells next to nothing about what the movie is about. And because Abrams is being tight-lipped about the project and there's next to nothing in the trailer, on the movie's website or anywhere else on the web, people are blogging up a storm about this movie, trying desperately to find out what this movie is really about. I call that a brilliant advertising move. Give the people enough to get interested about the project and then let them tear loose on the web trying to find more information about it, creating more viral advertising and more buzz about the project. Check out the film trailer below ....
And if you're looking for more goodness on this movie, apparently there's a possible movie poster for this flick over at /film that shows a headless Statue of Liberty with the ruined skyline of New York City in the background. Why is Lady Liberty headless you might wonder? Watch the trailer above and you'll know why. Now all Abrams and company have to do is live up to the hype being generated on the web over the movie. ![]() ![]() February 01 Serialized audiobook to conclude with plot twists, celebrity cameos ? Furth is currently plotting the new "Dark Tower" comic book series from Marvel Entertainment. Helen Keier, co-author of the "Star Wars New Essential Guide to Alien Species." She is also a blogger at StarWars.com, and a freelance editorial consultant for Lucasfilm Publishing. "It is an honor to invite so many talented, creative stars in the science-fiction community to appear on the podcast," author J.C. Hutchins said. "This is another first in podcasting. The ending of 'Deceit' won't be remembered for just the story's action and plot twists. The caliber of these entertainers enhances the listening experience." Anderson, Foster, Doctorow and the other guests are the latest in a series of 7th Son cameos from veteran science-fiction entertainers. Past celebrity readers have included actor Nathan Fillion (star of the TV series "Firefly" and recent guest star on ABC's "LOST"), Jeph Loeb (writer/producer of NBC's "Heroes") and award-winning sci-fi/fantasy novelists Robert J. Hutchins' website features artwork, music, fiction, videos and "virtual reality" tours based on scenes in the books -- all created by fans. 7th Son, a free weekly podcast, is the most popular "podiobook" series in history. 7th Son is the #1 most-popular program at the podcast directory PodcastPickle.com, and is listed as a Top 20 podcast in iTunes' Literature category. The first novel in the series -- titled "Descent" -- was nominated for two podcast fiction awards. The novel has been featured on such popular blogs as BoingBoing.net and MissSnark.com. "7th Son, Book Two: Deceit" and "Book One: Descent" can be found at www.JCHutchins.net and at www.Podiobooks.com. ### About the novel: 7th Son is the story of seven strangers who have been brought together after the recent assassination of the U.S. president. These men quickly discover they all appear to be the same man ... with identical childhood memories. Unwitting participants in a human cloning experiment, these "John Michael Smiths" have been assembled to catch the man who murdered the president. Their target? The man they were cloned from; the original John Michael Smith, code-named "John Alpha." TV Show: Burn Notice: Pilot & IdentityFirst let me state that I appreciate that USA networks plays the heck out of their shows. And for this reason I was able to see the Pilot and first Episode: Identity of Burn Notice. You may recall that I wrote about Burn Notice as a PPP campaign. I was paid to write about that and I was sincere in my excitement of seeing this show. However the Pilot episode came on last Thursday when I was seeing the Transformers Movie Twice. I forgot to set the VCR. (I refuse to get TiVO, I can program a VCR dang it, I just don't always remember). So I missed it. But today while on vacation I saw that the episode Identity and the Pilot episode was also on. And let me tell you the show is a pretty fun ride. I love the character of Michael Westen as well as Sam and Fiona. Michael's mother is pretty fun too. For anyone who doesn't know, Burn Notice is about a CIA agent who receives a 'Burn Notice' and what that means in the spy business is that you are completely cut off. Your assets are frozen, your credit is ruined and you are basically stuck where you are dumped. Michael was dumped in Miami. And Miami is where a friend named Sam ended up, Sam is an ex military guy and he is also observing and reporting on Michael. And Michael knows it. Sam also helps Michael out with the 'jobs' that Michael does. How else can I describe this show. Well, you take one part McGuyver, one part The Equalizer, an equal part A-Team and blend it with some Moonlighting and you have yourself Burn Notice. The Pilot episode introduces us to Michael, his mother, Sam, Fiona and the government agents watching Michael. We also meet a drug dealer named Sugar who attempts to intimidate Michael. Michael is not easily intimidated. I think the part of the episode that I liked the most was the final meeting between Michael and Sugar. The show goes along and is narrated once in a while by Michael. I like this kind of storytelling. It is very funny. The second episode Michael and crew help some Miami retiree's with a con artist. I liked how Michael not only got all the money back but he put a big hurt on the con man. Allison also liked the show as did her father. I will be making sure that this show is taped all summer long.
![]() ![]() January 31 eBay Global: Busiest Shopping Day Expected in December on "Green Monday"Virtual cash registers were ringing across the Web this Cyber Monday following shopping momentum from Black Friday. Data from PayPal showed a 33 percent increase from 2006 in online payment volume the day after Thanksgiving. From secure transactions to increased traffic, hot products to hard-to-find gifts, eBay Inc. Â companies, including Shopping.com and PayPal, reported encouraging Cyber Monday shopping trends on the heels of a busy weekend. "Cyber Monday traditionally marks the ramp-up of the online holiday shopping season and with the data that's rolling in, eTailers should see green this holiday," said Jim Griffith, eBay Inc. dean of education. "As Internet shopping grows increasingly convenient and consumers become more comfortable buying on the Web, more and more shoppers are avoiding the long lines and going online to check everything off their holiday lists." Cyber Monday Busier Than Ever From Cyber Monday 2005 to 2006, PayPal reported a 34 percent increase in total payment volume (TPV) online, an indicator that each year more shoppers flock to the Web the Monday after Thanksgiving. Shopping.com's traffic to its merchants on Cyber Monday 2007 increased 28 percent compared to last year as more shoppers sought out the comparison shopping site to find some of the best online deals. Traffic to merchants for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, Black Friday through Cyber Monday, was also up 30 percent year-over-year. "Cyber Monday continues to be a big day for online shopping," said Susan Phillips, vice president of marketing for PayPal. "Regardless of when and what shoppers are buying online this holiday season, it's important to do it safely. With PayPal, the customer's financial information is never shared with the merchant, making it a safer and easier way to pay online." Busiest Day Expected on Green Monday Although eBay, Shopping.com and PayPal saw strong activity on Cyber Monday, the companies expect to see the busiest online shopping day come later in the season. Based on TPV data from the past five years, PayPal concludes that the holiday shopping season is becoming longer as consumers are shopping online well into December. Procrastinating gift-givers seem to abound, with 40 percent stating they'll do the bulk of their online holiday shopping in December, according to a recent Shopping.com consumer survey. In addition, PayPal data shows that holiday shopping activity each season is the busiest on the second Monday in December, rather than Cyber Monday, as it was in the early days of the Internet. "We're pleased with the early spike in online shopping, but are looking forward to the second Monday in December, or what we've begun to call 'Green Monday,' when we expect online shopping to really peak this season," said CEO of Shopping.com Josh Silverman. "Green Monday outpaced Cyber Monday in the past few years in terms of revenue and consumer traffic on our site. More shoppers are comfortable doing the bulk of their online shopping later in the season, and after surveying our merchants, we found that a whopping 72 percent are offering next day shipping this year as a response to demand to shop later." The Apple iPhone remains the most in-demand item on eBay. iPhones are the top-searched keyword across the site followed by iPod. Over 2,000 iPhones sold on eBay over the 2007 Thanksgiving weekend (Friday through Sunday). Before anybody comments - yes, we're aware that this article refers to the American eBay store, but the prices are frequently a good indication of the market within the UK. With iPhones selling frequently for over £400 on eBay UK, you really should look further afield if you have an interest in these products. eBay's UK business figures over the Christmas period have yet to be announced, but when they are we'll post them here.Copyright (c) Alligata Media and Taylor Made Publishing Limited, 2008 January 30 RAPTOR MOVIEContinuity: In many scenes in this movie you can see that the ... Justify Stuff We BuyI bought some stuff this week, probably some stuff I really didn't need, but knowing is the first step. I ordered 2 books from Amazon, but those were paid for from profits made selling books, so those fit within my rules. Got 2 X-Box games off Microsoft's retail training site, but those were at a 84% discount off retail, and can be later traded for new games, so that's kind of okay. Also, bought some home supplies at Target, but those were on a gift card from Christmas, so none of my money changed hands. I bought an camera mount for my Point & Shoot that will make it much easier to shoot panoramic images. This purchase was justified by my continuing goals of becoming a better amateur photographer, so it kind of fits. This brings me to one of the first habits I need to change: How easy it is to justify all the unneeded stuff I purchase. I'm a sucker for discounts, sales, and clearance merchandise. Last week, while in W al-Mart for a reason I cannot recall, I noticed a clearance tag on this: Ultimate Bumblebee from the Transformers movie line. The original price tag was $79.99, and not once did I consider buying this large hunk of plastic, because it didn't look very good, and did not look fun. Now, with a clearance tag of $39.98, I wanted one. No, I needed one. Luckily none were in stock, and I have not been back once to check. Each time I see something on clearance / sale, I need to stop and think, would I have bought this at full price? If not, then there should be no reason to buy it for less money. Same goes with coupon s. Borders sends weekly coupons to my GMail account, because I am a member of their Borders Rewards club, in which I get a slight refund, which can be spent in Borders stores. Coupons come in, offering me 30% off any book or CD in stores, tempting me back in the stores.Problem: There are no books I 'need'. I'm sure I could browse around, find an impulse book, buy it, and then put it in the 'to read' stack. Not going to do this time, even if it means loosing out on the five bucks. Next time: How Amazon helps me buy less books! January 29 New York Comic Con: New Avengers/TransformersBy Ryan Penagos and Greg Draudt Transformers Movie Part 1Apologies to those who don't like my Transformer posts. :D With that out of the way... here are my Movie Transformer reviews/wish lists! No, there aren't really any wish lists as of yet, since I'm almost certainly getting everything myself. However, if you do want to get me something belated for my birthday do let me know. Or if you want to get me another present because you love me, even better. And yes, thus far, I know that there will be more Movie Transformers coming out after the movie. But heck, I realise half of them will be repaints, and I don't think I will collect them. Actually... I will. Oh nevermind. When I watch the Movie at least five times, you'll know, because I'll be gushing. Bumblebee Surprised I'm not starting with Optimus Prime? Well, Bumblebee was the first Movie Transformer that I ever touched or transformed (due to his ownership by a Master of the Universe). He comes with this really... queer "Automorph Technology" feature. Basically, you have to press a button to complete his transformation. For someone like me, who transforms Transformers without the instructions (come on, the fun of Transformers is like those metal puzzle rings!), this is really... annoying. Unless you have the luck to press the button by mistake, you will never discover how to complete his transformation without reading the instructions. ![]() At any rate, here's his robot mode. I don't like the idea that he is mute, since it makes it seem more like a show about handicapped Transformers. I also don't like the rumour that he might possibly die and be rebuilt, thus giving him a new form, as it could be anything ranging from a complete overhaul to merely a different head sculpt or paint job. Feh. I will not buy a Transformer just because it has a different paint job (but I did with Galaxy Force Optimus Prime and Galvatron; Dark Crumplezone actually has several different parts from Crumplezone) but I know people who will. Heck, I will be one of them. As for a commentary to his robot mode, well. I have made known my displeasure for the concept art direction of the film, that is, I don't like the Transformers to be so alien. Nevertheless, his head sculpt grows on you the more you... play with him. But his guns, the ones you see on his shoulders? They are planted on rotating wheels, so... more often than not, they are subject to gravity and fall in awkward positions. I like putting his guns on his hands instead, though. ![]() I'm not a car person, ironically, despite my love for Transformers. Nevertheless, his transformation bears homage to his original yellow Beetle in G1. His guns can be pegged on vehicle mode if you want, but suffers from the same problems as the robot mode. The one thing I like about Movie Transformers is how they have no gimmick, ala Headmasters or Targetmasters etc... Their only gimmick is that they have "Automorph Technology", which is arguably just spring-loaded stuff - several other Transformers have such features. ![]() Overall... I'd say he's not bad, really. I know I have the innate dislike for Movie Transformers, but by the time Bumblebee was in my grubby claws, I already thought of all the possibilities for Bumblebee. Namely, as the heroic rogue-scout who saves the day with a well placed shot to the groin. Yes, Transformers always aim for the groin in my world. Optimus Prime (Protoform) Now now, before you faint and gasp, be aware that there are at least four transformable versions of Optimus Prime around, all of different sculpts. In real life there are 4323, 423 versions of Optimus Prime. Nevertheless, this is Optimus Prime, as he first appears in the movie. I think it's neat they came up with a Protoform toy, but, I suspect that Protoform Starscream is the same sculpt, just with a different head and recoloured. Ah well, till all are one, I suppose. Courtesy of the Rising Sun-Mates, and the first Movie Transformer to send me into the Grand Black Hole of collecting them all. ![]() I think he bears homage to the Beast Wars Optimus Primal. Primarily the limbs, really. A little hard to pose, too, as he isn't really balanced very well. Nevertheless, he is super poseable. I like the chest and the windows, they are sort of a nice touch even if he is a Protoform. What are Protoforms? Well, in Beast Wars they are the raw forms of Transformers - only until they scan a transformation do they gain the additional features of the transformation. Before that, a Protoform is more or less a blank slate Transformer. A Transformer embryo, if you will. With a Spark. A Spark is a Transformer soul. ![]() However, even I have to admit how... uninspired his transformation is. Basically, he folds up to become an asteroid. It is true to the show, yes, but it's sort of like transforming into a ball. Now, unless you are Cybertron or something, transforming into a ball is not awe-inspiring. But I have to give the thumbs up for adhering to the show (presumably), instead of making him a "rock that talks!" or a "meteorite with missiles!", they made him an asteroid. Just a plain, simple, asteroid. Beautiful. ![]() The first and one of the smallest Optimus Primes for the series. Equally small sized would be the Deluxe-sized Optimus Prime, which is a Japan-only release. Rising Sun-Mates can smack me for saying you would be able to find it in Singapore. I should have looked closer and realised that the packaging for the Deluxe-sized Optimus Prime was completely in Japanese and had no English equivalent among the other toys. Ah well, it merits another trip to the land of the rising sun. I think he's an okay figure, just not that inspiring. But, he started me down the road of Movie Transformer Collecting Hell (just wait for the whining posts in a month or two). Jazz He transforms into a Pontiac Solstice! I don't know what that is. In fact, I don't know any of the cars that the Movie Transformers transform into. This could undoubtedly be because they are all owned by General Motors, and we live in a more Asian car dominated island. Nevertheless, I liked Jazz in G1 because he was sort of cool. As in, he never lost his cool, and he had funky music-based sonic powers. He was also (to me) the second-in-command of the Autobots, pre-Movie (after the Movie, Ultra Magnus was more or less second-in-command). ![]() Jazz is pretty cool looking. I like his head sculpt, it's very Jetfire-ish and evokes images of flight - ironic because he's a car, but well. He is also kind of stocky, like Barricade, and it makes him look tougher and stronger than the other Deluxes. His weapons are a sword (which looks like a gun) and a shield (made from his spoiler). Combined with his silver colours, it gives him the knight-ish feel, which is exactly how I'll play him when I re-enact my version of the Transformers Movie. ![]() His car mode is not bad too, but suffers from too many visible joints/seams. I like cars with natural spoilers though, so he's a win-win situation no matter how you fling it. His gun fits on his spoiler... which is not the brightest idea in the world, but it's not silly, either. ![]() Jazz holds the special honour of being the first Movie Transformer I willingly bought. Based almost entirely on his head sculpt. Which, as a result, lead to my collectorivism. He's Autobot Jazz, the knight of the Autobots, and come on, we all like visors. I like visors. I think visors are cool. Jazz is the typical cool hero, when you think about it. Wreckage The first Decepticon I opened, the other Movie Transformer that doomed me to collect etc... blah... you get the idea. Not that I don;t like collecting Transformers, mind you, but when I was in the land of the rising sun, I had no intention of collecting Movie Transformers, and every intention of saving money. Not anymore, I guess. Courtesy of pickley. ![]() Here is Wreckage in robot mode. Unfortunately it does not seem like he will play a very large part, nor make it into the Movie at all, possibly making him the first Movie Transformer toy that does not make it into the Movie. Sigh. Thankfully, he's only a Deluxe. He has two swords, and his arms are hugely poseable. This allows for almost any two-sword fighting pose you can think of. Or that I can think of, at any rate. In other words, if you are a Return of the Condor Heroes fan, he can duplicate any swordfighting move you see on TV. Which fits his bio and his description on the box (which is not really a box, but that is a grouse for another day). ![]() His vehicle mode isn't that bad, but it isn't very inspiring, either. He's described as a "personal carrier". A limousine with armour? I don't know, but you know, a larger cannon would have gone miles to giving him a more menacing look. Right now, the gun (bet you missed it) seems like an afterthought rather than part of the vehicle. ![]() Wreckage is kind of aptly named. And his name is not a homage to any previous Transformer. In light of this, I'd say he'd ordinarily be one of the last few I would have purchased. Sad, sad indeed. He's decent, but not desirable. Brawl He is supposedly one of the most problematic Movie Transformer toys that have been produced, breaking easily, being brittle, and the joints not fitting correctly. Taking no chances, I read through the instructions before transforming him. And believe me, he is not going to get smacked around like the other Transformers do. Poor Leobreaker has a dead voicebox thanks to his repeated smackings against Megatron. He is to be taken care of like an invalid little girl. Anyway, it's not like the Decepticons have too few soldiers or anything. They outnumber the Autobots by two times, I think. ![]() Brawl has a feature I really like, known as the RBG, or the "Really Big Gun", in homage to Cable's Special in Overpower. He has an RBG and a claw. Pretty. However his balance is a little out of whack with such a large gun, and thus his poseability suffers a little. ![]() As if to signal the potential problems with him, the image on the website is abnormally small. He looks like an Abrams tank, if I'm not wrong (not like I know any other tank brands, mind you), and hey. A tank is what G2 Megatron transformed into, and tanks are suitably destructive enough for a Decepticon transformation. ![]() Brawl Brawl Brawl. He's not a favourite, and he's not going to get much play due to his supposed fragility. I guess if he doesn't play a big part in the film, he's going to just be relegated to the faceless masses of the Decepticon forces. Barricade In the Movie? Check. In the Movie website? Check. In the Movie Wikipedia entry" Check. Barricade looks set to be a major player in the Movie (relatively speaking). If I remember correctly, either Barricade or Blackout was supposed to have been Soundwave, since they have smaller robots shooting out of their chests. The idea was scrapped though, and Soundwave looks set to arrive in the sequel. I hope the Movie is good. I'm planning on watching it a million times. ![]() He comes with a small robot spy, Frenzy! Frenzy was one of the cassettes for Soundwave in G1. However he appears to be larger than a human (relative to Barricade), whereas in the trailers he seems to be smaller or human-sized. Barricade has a fierce face, and his windshield actually separates during his transformation. He doesn't have a listed "Automorph Technology" feature because... his left arm can spring out and become longer. That's it. A "punch" as detailed on the card. A freakish left arm, if you ask me. I wish he had weapons. ![]() A police car! And if you were unclear in anyway, he has the word "Police" written all over him! No doubts about him being a police car. But then, police cars don't look like that on this sunny island. ![]() I can't say I love him, or hate him. But then, I can't say that for most of the Decepticons either. Maybe because they have names that don't immediately bring to mind famous Decepticons. Ironically, I like Frenzy the most, even if he doesn't transform, because he reminds me of the cassettes. Regardless, Barricade is a decent homage to Soundwave, although I don't much like him. And that's it for this post! Look out for more over the weekend, where I review the other Transformers in my collection - Optimus Prime (Leader size), Optimus Prime (Voyager size), and Ratchet. Might also review more Deluxes if I get them, but I don't think I'll like any Decepticon except Scorponok, Starscream, and Megatron. Okay okay how about this for potential installments (see below). If anyone wants to know, the Target exclusive Hardtop is a recolour of Hardtop from Cybertron; while the other two are ostensibly original moulds. Or so I hope Till all are one! Transformers Movie Blog Series Index ![]() ![]() January 28 Christmas, New Years, and Everything in Between![]() ![]() I just realized that I never really posted about Christmas. I also thought I would fill you in on New Year's Eve and my get together with some friends. First, Christmas. It really was a good Christmas. The kids got stuff they wanted but not so much stuff that they don't even play with it. Their main presents were their Leapsters. They absolutely love them. They have been playing them almost non-stop since Christmas. I got some really good deals on games for them so now they have 10 games. That makes it more fun. Ryder has already learned a lot from playing with it and Lily is starting to recognize her numbers and letters thanks to it. They also got a ton of new DVDs. The girls got both High School Musicals and the new Barbie movie. Ryder got his Transformers movie so he was happy. My brothers came down for lunch on Christmas day, well most of them. My oldest brother really pissed me off. He went to my uncle's for Christmas Eve, that in its self made me mad, and got drunk there. He was too hung over to come to my house for lunch, but luckily my other brothers picked up his sons and brought them over. We all had a nice time eating and opening gifts. Everyone one hung around until well after 4:00. It was nice having the family all together. Second, I had a get together with some friends from high school. One of my best friends who lives in Florida was in town for Christmas so we thought it would be great to get everyone together. A couple of girls from the "gang" couldn't make it but their were still 4 of us. The husbands all has something else to do so they didn't come. Dan was a little disappointed being the only guy here, until Roxanna and Jeff showed up. Roxanna's sisters also came so we had a full house. There were 7 adults and 11 kids. All of the kids were 7 or younger. It was a blast watching all of the kids play together. They never get a chance to but yet they all acted like best friends. The best part was watching Lily and Baiden playing together. Baiden belongs to my friend who lives in Florida. Her and Lily are so much alike its almost scary. Whenever they get together they just go wild. They spent a good deal of time just running through the house screaming. They also thought it was hilarious to chase Ryder, something he didn't think was so funny. Now for New Year's Eve. We had a ton of fun. The usual people were here. Roxanna, Jeff, Greg, Maggie, Liz and even Deanna which is Roxanna's mom. We spent the evening eating junk food and watching movies. We played trivia games and had a stuffed animal fight. It was pretty loud at time but lots of fun. The kids all managed to stay up past midnight, even Greg and Layla. They seemed to have lots of fun and we all slept in the next day. Things are finally getting back to normal around here. The kids went back to school today. I figured Lily would be sad but she didn't seem to mind them being gone. I still need to get the Christmas decorations packed up and put back in the attic. My goal is to have it done by the end of the weekend. Then I'm going to start sorting out all the kids clothes and toys and get rid of what we don't need. Hopefully by the end of January my house will be a lot less cluttered and then maybe I can start painting and decorating like I've been wanting to. Transformers The Movie - Part Deux![]() Sometimes it's hard for us to let go of our youth. When I was younger I loved the Transformers (still do considering I'm watching Season One as I type this). I still collect some of the newer toys that strike my fancy, though the Generation 1 replicas are too expensive for me. In any case, I was out digging around on the Transformers website when I found a link to a movie website. It turns out that a live-action movie is in the works; scheduled for release on 7/4/2007. I won"t say I didn?t feel a tingle of excitement, but it was quickly overshadowed by deep concern. Despite the success of some of the current comics-gone-movies, there are still a few that are gigantic stinkers. Okay, the Transformers weren"t exactly all that special. They were quite cheesy and as an adult I see the shows were glorified marketing mechanisms, but I digress. When I was 11, the original Transformers movie was released. I remember busting my butt washing windows for cabbies to earn enough money to go see it. In all, I saw the movie numerous times in theaters. I had a video tape I wore to nothingness (I still have it, actually). I even recorded the audio so I could listen to the movie during family trips (we only had walkmans back then, not in-car DVD players these young whipper snappers have today). The original movie was cool. I own it on DVD and still watch it from time to time. Of course, it was also another marketing mechanism by which they (Hasbro) swapped out all the old Transformers with new ones. If you watch the first few seasons, you?ll see Autobots and Decepticons take hit after hit. In the movie, they fall with one shot. Kinda obvious if you ask me. BUY NEW TOYS!!! Going back to the new live-action movie, I hope they are able to come up with a screenplay that will cater to kids while not taking a giant poo on the original fans like me. Personally, I"d prefer to see the Gen 1 guys. It?s wishful thinking on my part, since it"ll most likely involve the newer versions of the characters. Despite my misgivings, I know I"ll go see it. The good part is I?m older, so I don"t care about waiting like I did when I was a wee one. January 27 Re: The Digital Cutting Room - Quo Vadis Vegas?
The studios are not going to change the production of a 150 million dollar budget movie to suite the various needs of video editing software. Without using the tools that they used or equivalent when making that movie then it simply would not look the same. Vegas is NOT compatible with the things required to make such a movie. If you don't film a movie in widescreen then the movie just isn't going to be widescreen. You can chop of the top and bottom to make it look widescreen but in reality you are missing alot of the picture and the quality is dropping to the floor. You can try to reproduce the "Transformers" movie in Vegas but the end result will not turn out the same. So, if a movie studio wouldn't even think about it because they aren't going to focus production of a 150 million dollar movie budget around the requirements of an underpopulated video editing system and the tools that make the transformers movie look sooo good aren't even compatable so it won't have the same end result anyways then no... Vegas could not edit Transformers. Although I am a strong Apple fan lets use them and the VFX industry as an example for a second. Even if the VFX industry wanted to switch completely to macs they couldn't prior to the intel switch (don't get me wrong there are plenty of all mac vfx houses out there like Luma Pictures etc). Reason being is that all the software and plugins required to make movies like "spiderman" aren't mac compatable. For instance the sandman scene when the sand builds the sandman in the beginning. It REQUIRED the software "Houdini" which is windows and linux ONLY. Without it the team would have had to build ALOT of proprietary software, plugins etc that would have made the production costs through the roof and even then it probably wouldn't have looked exactly the same or as good. People could argue that it "could" be done but what exactly is the point in even saying that. A studio wouldn't pay for that work around and an individual certainly wouldn't do it on their own so how "could you" exactly. I can push my car from california to florida but WOULD I" Heck no. Anyways, Props to Vegas as a growing editor and I'm sure at some point when it continues to grow we will see it in alot of production use but until then... Lets take this PC Mag review as it was meant to be and compare apples to apples... Not a video editor to production packages. Nice chatting with you : ) Transformers 360 Impressions [This Is Bad Comedy]
By this point you know about the basics. Transformers is a free-roaming mission based game which lets you choose between playing a heroic Autobot or evil Decepticon as both sides vie for control of the legendry Allspark, the source of all Transformer life. Rather than painstakingly explore every facet of the game, I decided to focus on the central theme. Good versus bad...right versus wrong. What Transformers Does Right Voices: Even the voices that aren't Peter Cullen and Frank Welker, the original Optimus and Megatron, are done rather well. Shia in particular sounds really into his role, unlike certain video game voiceover actors I could mention (Yes you Tobey), which leads me to... Human Characters: Rather than going with the standard method of building a character model and painting on a face to represent the movie actors, TT actually created full models for the humans, giving them a slightly exaggerated look at feel that really helps them mesh with the action. It really is an example of how real-world characters should be done in games. Scale: Travellers Tales has done a pretty amazing job of making you feel like you are a huge freaking robot in a world full of squishy humans. I was also impressed by the accuracy in depicting the carious bots' sizes in relation to each other, though I am sure that is more a product of the movie character specs. Fan Service: Playing through the Autobot storyline I ran into a character that isn't featured in the film but is probably one of the most menacing characters from the original comic book and cartoon series, completely re-imagined to fit with the design aesthetic. Not going to mention any names, but fans will be in for quite a shock when they see who it is. There could very well be more lurking in there for all I know. Add to that the unlockable concept arts, trailers, and G1 character models and you've almost got to buy this is you're a fan...well, a rabid Transformers fan like myself. What Transformers Does Wrong Graphics: While it looks pretty enough in screenshots, playing through the game on the 360 I can't shake the feeling that all of the bloom and lighting effects are covering up some less than stellar graphics. Encounter Zones: As you roam about the map you enter encounters, some of which are surrounded by green circles that you cannot step outside of for fear of failing the mission. Your enemies can certainly be knocked out of it though, giving you plenty of time to stand around looking bloomy while waiting for them to get back. Invisible Walls: The game is NOT a free-roaming game if you have invisible walls in it, period. Put the whole thing in an impassable canyon if you'd like, but no stupid invisible walls. It's Optimus Prime, not Optimus Mime. Camera: See those trees? You're in there somewhere. So is the robot trying to kill you. Pretty snazzy, huh? Even in the open streets the camera isn't all that responsive, making for some really unfortunate deaths on y part. Checkpoints: There are no checkpoints, despite the fact that missions themselves use a waypoint system that would have been perfect for it. I don't like failing at the last moment during a fifteen minute mission and having to start back over. Transforming: This is going to sound extremely nitpicky, but why can't I transform into vehicle mode in mid-air? I can change to robot in mid-air, why not the other way around? I don't want to live in a world where I can't jump off the top of the building and turn into a helicopter halfway down. Til All Are One So after a quick tallying we have four good things versus eight bad things. Not really a good balance. Even figuring the bonus 20% for just having the name Transformers on the cover and you've still got something just north of completely mediocre. If you're really curious about the game, try giving it a rent, or at least pick it up somewhere used where you can return it just in case. I'd mention that it is a must-have item for rabid fans, but we've already bought it. January 26 Transformers Movie Part 8Ooooh doesn't it give you chills? I'm about to review the Movie. I'm not a movie reviewer by any standards. I may be, er, film-trained, but my tastes are still rather odd, I prefer mainstream but only some, I hate arthouse films, and I generally have offbeat, esoteric tastes. It's not like I've read a lot of reviews either. What I'm going to do is to give my frank opinion of the Movie. Of course it's going to be tainted by the fact that I'm a fanboy and I'm film-trained and I've got incredibly esoteric tastes. I love it to pieces, but unlike many people out there, I'm not going to say its flawless too. :D There are spoilers. The Plot I'm not going to say the plot is good. It's basic. They're looking for a McGuffin (the glasses), which leads to the Big McGuffin (the Allspark). But when you take an 80s' cartoon premise and apply it to the big screen, that's what happens. It works for me. The plot is more or less an excuse for the Transformers to beat each other up. Or to transform, chase each other, and have plenty of explosions. What irks me is that... you don't really see the power of the Allspark. Sure, it's hinted at - Sam drops it and several Transformers are created. But I was kind of expecting something global, a worldwide boom, the whole planet going haywire. Which leads me to the next point. Plot holes. The people in the city don't seem terrified until the Transformers arrive. Which is okay, until you realise that there is a worldwide communications blackout engineered by a Decepticon virus. Bet you forgot that too, right? Decepticon software also doesn't seem to be very far ahead of human software; to me, if you can decrypt and block what they're doing, that means that in a few years time, we'll have software on par with the Decepticons. How do they manage to transport a frozen Megatron in the 1920s? Really? I don't recall technology being that sophisticated, and to keep Megatron at sub-zero temperatures and transport him halfway across the world.... kind of strains my disbelief. Yes, he does wake up temporarily during his transportation, but he gets put down again. By humans. Grumble grumble. How can Megatron lose to the flesh creatures" But really, you're watching a show about transforming robots. :D The Humans are annoying. The only human I want to watch is Megan Fox. Washing a Transformer, her clothes wet and transparent, clinging to her already tight body like a... Okay enough with the fantasizing. I will say it now. I didn't like annoying humans in my Transformers then, and I don't like it now. I don't watch Transformers for irritating little boys, or amazing Jack Bauer-level Special Ops soldiers, or cliched stereotypes. No. I watch them for the Transformers! Robots! Not humans! There are way too many humans in the Movie for my liking, and I don't like to see my Transformers being taken down by humans. They should be taken down by other Transformers. That being said, Sam Witwicky (Shia LeBeouf) does manage to carry across the relationship with Bumblebee really well - at the end, when Bumblebee can talk (apparently due to being healed by the Allspark), there's this... camaraderie. Friendship. A... brotherly kind of relationship between them. It makes me think back to the beginning, when Bumblebee helps Sam get Mikaela (Megan Fox) (what a weird shit name to give to her in the Movie) to go out with him. I can just imagine Bumblebee thumping his chest and going "For Brothers!". It's this inter-species friendship, this everyman feel, that grounds the show and gives it the emotional resonance to make you remember it. Which is, after all, the point of having humans. To strike an emotional chord with you. Beside Megan Fox, the rest of the humans are shit. I don't want irritating government secret agents who are not funny, I don't want to see hackers who are... boring, I don't want to see super soldiers running around. They don't touch me, they don't make it any better for me. I can do without them. But Sam, well. It's his friendship with Bumblebee, set against the epic backdrop of the Transformers' intergalactic battle, and how he wins the day, that seals it for me. It's like in LOTR, how the fate of the world rests on the friendship of two small little hobbits carrying a ring. Homages There are too many to count, and seriously, you can go find lists of them online. I'll tell you what I spotted and/or was reminded of. "Freedom is the right of all sentient beings." - Optimus Prime's motto on his bio on his G1 packaging. Sent shivers down my spine. "One shall stand, one shall fall." - Optimus Prime's dialogue to Megatron in the original Movie. Bumblebee's first scene is next to a beetle - I had to be reminded of this. But it's a neat little homage. Optimus Prime's colour scheme - I have to admit it's a little ah beng, but it's not too garish and it really makes my day to see his blue and reds all over the big screen. Frenzy's first transformation as a CD player - Frenzy was the name of one of Soundwave's cassettes. Obviously, turning into a cassette player in this day and age is more like "blatantly out-of-place robot" than "robots in disguise", so a CD player really fits the bill. Starscream's backstabbing - One of the F22s who shoots Megatron in the end is actually Starscream. I love the homages. I will buy the DVD and do a blow-by-blow account, but until then, I'll leave you with this. Graphics They are top-notch. Fantastic. Spectacular. Words fail me. Seriously, I don't even have to suspend my disbelief for them. I wasn't expecting much, but the graphics look realistic, the lighting and shadows are perfect, the moving parts move the way you'd expect, and there's nothing cheesy or weird about the way they move. They look like real transforming robots! And what's better is that they don't have the dirty, used look that Star Wars vehicles have. This comparison applies because Industrial Light and Magic did the CGI. The Transformers are clean and shiny, and they become dirty at appropriate points (after fighting). The amount of detail is stunning. I'd watch the show again just to examine how they transform, how they move, and how each little bit falls everywhere. And how my toys are woefully inadequate representations of them. Expectations I really wasn't expecting much. Truth be told, I think no-one was. Maybe that's what led to the tremendous success of the film. Nobody expected it to be good, so it was a humoungously pleasant surprise. To me, at least. I went in expecting something... sci-fi and zen. You know, something that completely hit off the mark. But no! The Transformers were literally larger-than-life, and captivated my attention like nothing else could. The plot was not too holey too, and it doesn't take itself too seriously. The sequel has a lot to live up to. The Transformers This is a very broad scope I like the revelation that all modern technology comes from Megatron. It's this kind of thing that gives me secret happy chills down my spine. I don't like how humans can take down Transformers. Seriously, short of a nuke, I don't expect any amount of human-based firepower to even scratch a Transformer. Call me picky, but I'm here to watch Transformers, not Transformers-fighting-humans. The US army can get lost. However, there is a significant lack of interaction and development between the Transformers themselves. True, they've been around for over 10k years, so I guess they're pretty mature. But the only real conflict is between Ironhide and Optimus Prime, when Ironhide wants to blow up Sam's parents. Optimus Prime and Megatron don't even really banter very much. I know that the Movie sets them up as brothers, but this is hinted at exactly nowhere in the film, and it's a very WTF moment when Optimus Prime calls Megatron "brother". The only significant explanation would be that Optimus Prime would rather die himself than use the Allspark to kill Megatron. Also, it's also an excuse for why Optimus Prime gets thrashed by Megatron - he doesn't want to hurt his brother. But this still really irks the hell out of me, because it's pointless to put it in. And it begs the question of Transformer relations, reproduction, etc... I would have liked all of them to fight each other at the same time. That would have been solid. But seeing how the Decepticons severely outnumber the Autobots.... I'll go into each Transformer now. Woot! Optimus Prime He doesn't disappoint. He's big. He's powerful. He pwns Bonecrusher, showing us just why he is the Autobot leader. He has morals. He is the ethical pillar for the Autobots. But gosh is he impatient to find the Allspark! I loved Peter Cullen's revoicing as Optimus Prime, but to me, the scene at the house where the Autobots trample over everything and keep hurrying Sam to get the glasses is a little... over-the-top. It makes the Autobots, especially Prime, look like impatient 5-year-olds. But it was pretty hilarious, no matter how many times you watch it. Of course, I wish he had a trailer like he did in G1 - but there's always the sequel. He doesn't hold the Matrix, which is a significant departure from his G1 form. But then, I guess it would be overkill to have everything in the Movie. And his lightsaber extension! Perfect homage to his G1 axe (which only appears once and never again, but well...) Megatron He looks ugly. And there's no build-up to his... return, so to speak. His day really sucks - he dies on the day he reawakens. He transforms into a Cybertronian jet... it's not bad, really, but transforming into a tank would really have sealed the deal for me. Pity Brawl (Devastator) occupies that role already. But Megatron doesn't have enough screen time for you to feel excited or thrilled about his battle with Optimus Prime. You don't see the depths of his evil, his cruelty, although you do see his power when he rips Jazz apart. Poor Jazz. And at the end, when the Allspark is shoved into his chest. I don't know about you, but I thought it was a mistake by Sam, and that Megatron was going to become all powerful and a god, and that the Autobots were totally screwed. Ooops, not really. He was dying. I guess that's what you get with handheld camera angles. Bumblebee Like I said earlier, he gives the small everyman emotional resonance to a rather epic battle between titans. But call me elitist, or exclusivist, or whatever. I don't mind when prior Transformer fans say they love Bumblebee. But I get really irked when people who didn't know what Transformers were before this month and laughed at my Transformer love, would suddenly gush on how they love Bumblebee and want to buy Bumblebee and want to drive Bumblebee and want to fuck Bumblebee. Poseurs. At any rate, I love all the people who loved Transformers and now love Bumblebee. I love all the new Transformer converts! I just don't like the "Bumblebee so prettyyyyyy" people, generally. Right, so back to Bumblebee. He gets significant development, and you really feel sorry for him when you realise he's the only mute, and how Megatron shattered his vocal chords last time. Okay I teared a bit at the end, when he elects to stay with Sam and watch Sam get laid for the first time. What better friend could you want" And he's not a wuss, either! He actually took out Barricade (off-screen) at the beginning of the Movie! Jazz Seriously. Giving him a... black voice, having him act all hip-hop and fuck, is one of my pet peeves. Yes Jazz was mildly like that in G1, but this takes it to the extreme. Jazz was competent and cool in G1. Movie Jazz is... well he's the appropriate Autobot to die. Any other Autobot would have made the cinema riot. Not Jazz. He's irritating, acts like a poseur, and is worthless in combat. Where are your guns"! Ironhide I expected way more conflicts between him and Optimus Prime, given that Ironhide seems to be a shoot first ask later kinda guy. But, well, nothing happened. And for someone with really big guns, I'm surprised he didn't actually take out any Decepticon by himself. What are your guns for"?" What is the point of showing off your cannons if they can't one-hit-kill anything? Ironhide... you disappointed me. At the very least, I thought you'd take out Barricade. Ratchet He doesn't heal anyone. He's a medic. He doesn't get enough screen time or development. Starscream Why do you only have two lines of dialogue? Why? Why? I have to say that Starscream is much smarter here, rather than his dumb, arrogant, traitorous self. He stabs Megatron in the back at just the right moment, hidden amongst other real F-22s. He looks alien and menacing. He is a nasty bastard who beats up both Ratchet and Ironhide before flying off. I can actually see him competently leading the Decepticons here. I don't particularly fancy his robot mode, but hey, he's got a V-shaped body. Blackout He is repeatedly touted as the largest Decepticon, but I can't really tell. And he gets shot down by the HUMANS WTF ARGH. Autobots! Fight! Scorponok How can you be the first Decepticon to fall? You were the Headmaster Leader in another life time! Argh. You fell to humans some more! Bonecrusher You can skate. Woot. Cannon fodder for Optimus Prime. Barricade Nasty bastard, with a wicked face. The problem is, you escaped. You ran away. You're slower than a TANK, for fuck's sake how come you couldn't get to the battle faster? At least we saw how the rest died or ran away... no-one is even sure whether you survived. Brawl (Devastator) You're a big nasty tank that doesn't talk. You get taken out by the combined efforts of the Autobots, true... but you don't talk. Although I must admit that seriously ups your power and impressiveness level. Frenzy I have no opinions on Frenzy. He's... sort of like a walking protoform. I had hoped he would merge with someone... but I guess not. And so and so and so this marks the end of my review. Something's lacking, right? Not enough praise, perhaps? True. But I want you all to know that regardless, I love the Transformers Movie. --- this post is to be continued --- And so it is continued. Outnumbering As woohoo has mentioned, the Decepticons vastly outnumber the Autobots. Well, not tremendously, as there is Autobots: Optimus Prime, Jazz, Bumblebee, Ratchet, Ironhide Decepticons: Megatron, Starscream, Blackout, Brawl (Devastator), Bonecrusher, Barricade, Scorponok, Frenzy Although really, Scorponok and Frenzy are wimpy enough that they won't really pose a legitimate threat to the rest of the Autobots. That means they are only outnumbered by one Decepticon. But the Autobots have the humans. And what did the humans do? Shoot down Blackout. Who has been repeatedly touted as the largest Decepticon in the Movie. So what does this prove? That human assistance is at least equivalent to one more Decepticon. In the end, they are rather equally matched. Barring Frenzy and Scorponok, the Decepticons outnumber the Autobots by 1. The Autobots are assisted by humans who have a bajillion fighter jets and firepower up the wazoo. No, the Autobots are not seriously outnumbered. Neither are they seriously outclassed. They are not the underdogs, either. Jazz died. OMFG what a tragedy. Seriously, 1 Autobot casualty compared to 5 Decepticon casualties (in the fight itself, there are 7 casualties when you count Scorponok & Frenzy) is pretty fantastic for any army. No humans died. The Autobots kick ass, seriously. They are not on the side of severe odds or what not. They kick ass. I don't want to be a Decepticon, I want to be an Autobot. Because they really are the stronger Transformers in the Movie. Coolness I guess this deserves a section all to itself. Who's cooler? Let's look at Autobots first. Optimus Prime deserves the cool points, no matter how you swing it. He's big, he's in primary colours, he has Peter Cullen's voice, he's a leader, he's big, he's got large guns, he has knowledge and strength tempered by wisdom and compassion. He's everyone's favourite BigBot. Bumblebee, well, by virtue of being one of the main characters, he has to be cool. But he also has the camaraderie with Sam, the best buddies kinda feel, and you know what? He takes down Barricade (off camera) all by himself. Barricade. Bumblebee. You didn't think Bumblebee could do anything, right? Well, he took down a Decepticon by himself. That earns him cool points immediately. Ironhide earns cool points because... he has large guns. That's it. Problem is, he doesn't get to use it as much as I'd like, so he doesn't get as many cool points. The other two, Jazz and Ratchet, don't merit any cool points. At all. So let's go on to Decepticons. Megatron the ancient precursor of human technology. Yes, he is cool because he rips up Jazz, beats Optimus Prime to a pulp, and is the Decepticon leader, and turns into an alien Cybertronian jet. Yeah he's ugly. But he's powerful ugly, if you know what I mean. Blackout, for being the first Transformer seen in the Movie, and for having the classic transforming sound. And being black. Black is a cool colour. And having a fake pilot, too. Starscream gets cool points too, simply for being Starscream. Yeah, he didn't get much air time. But he's a F-22 Raptor! He's a figher jet! He flies! He backstabs Megatron! He smacks down Ratchet & Ironhide! He doesn't appear much, but when he does, trouble follows. Yep, the Decepticons are cooler. If not for their sheer firepower. Overall Really, Transformers is a good movie. To all the naysayers, I'd say to judge Transformers on its merits as a movie, and to bear in mind that it is a movie. What works in a animated series does not necessarily work to a live-action theatrical film. Ultimately, don't you want to see big robots beating each other up? Miscellaneous What's on and up for today's extra bits? I'd do a Wave 2 Preview, but... Oh heck. Wave 2 Preview it is, then. Short one though, I need to go sleep soon. Dreadwing His name bears homage to the Powermaster duo, Dreadwing and Darkwing. He's got Swindle's head... something I definitely like. He's on the buy list.Dropkick Brand new sculpt, made just for the Movie toyline, if I am not wrong. He is pretty impressive in terms of articulation, and as a wholly original Transformer, I'm getting him.Payload Another Transformer with a Swindle head. He's not particularly special, but he's original, which makes him a sure-buy.Arcee She's actually a recolour from the Transformers: Energon series, if I'm not mistaken. But given more gritty, real-life colours. I'm definitely getting her (Autobot), if only so that I have a female Movie Transformer in my collection. She's a recolour, but I've never had a Transformer with her sculpt before.Bumblebee (2008 Camaro) If I have to introduce him, you should go back to Part 1 and start reading. He's nowhere to be found. Damn. He is in the realm of must-gets, which will set me back severely.Megatron (Voyager-sized) Megatron! With nicer colours and spooky icy details dripping from him. Perfect to battle my Voyager-sized Optimus Prime. More money being sucked out of me.Brawl (Leader-sized) Do you want to know a secret" I buy anything that is Leader-sized. I am a sucker. If all the Movie Transformers came out in Leader-sized, I'd be dead broke by now.Thundercracker A recolour of Starscream, he falls into the realm of "maybe not". After all, it's not like Starscream really needs a variant clone of him to fight. The Decepticon ranks are well-stocked.Rescue Ratchet He bears homage to Red Alert colours, ambulance colours, and G1 Ratchet colours. Even so... Ratchet's not really one of my favourites. He belongs to the "maybe not" pile.Final Battle Jazz Jazz here has a better gun! Sigh. For that reason, and that reason alone, I might acquire him. Other than that, screw it, his battle damaged colours aren't that impressive anyway. If he can be separated into two pieces... that might boost his appeal.Optimus Prime (Voyager-sized) This is the only Wave 2 release I will not get. I already have him, albeit in prettier packaging (although more expensive). At least, I think so. If he is a different sculpt, expect to see my money fly out of the wallet. The setback from this is at least SGD$462. Sigh. Christmas was a lot of fun, but also a lot of stress as we had to coordinate traveling up to Michigan to see both sides of the family. This is not easy to do with two energetic boys! But in the end, it was fun for all. About two weeks before Christmas, Brayden told us that the thing he wanted more than anything else for Christmas was a "Transformers Helmet". He was referring to a toy helmet that looks like "Optimus Prime" the leader of the good transformers, that talks and changes your voice. Well we decided that we'd get it for him, but BOY was it hard to find. Since the transformers movie has been out of the theaters for so long now, the toys are not much in demand. We searched and searched and then we finally saw the helmet in a Toys R Us ad one Sunday morning. Well I called the store early in the morning and they told me they only had two left! I felt like a crazy person as I sped across town just to get my kid the one thing he wanted for Christmas, but the mission was successful and Brayden still loves his helmet. Once we were up in Michigan, little Kyler did some pretty amazing things... most notably, he took his first steps! It was so much fun to watch him waddle across the room and the see the excited look on his face when he reached his goal! The only problem is, now he walks EVERYWHERE and tries to get into EVERYTHING. Including things that used to be out of his reach. So today, I went around the house and installed child safety locks on all the cabinets, and boy you should have seen the look of confusion on little Kyler's face the first time he went back to the Kitchen after the locks were on! It was priceless to see him try to open the cabinet and then look at me as if to say "Daddy, the door is broken!" Brayden continues to amaze us with his ever growing intellect and powers of observation. He is also VERY protective of his little brother. So much so, that once when Kyler was crawling toward the stairway (mind you he was still about 12 feet away), Brayden sprinted across the room and tackled him so that he wouldn't hurt himself on the stairs. It was funny. Sarah and I have made some new year's resolutions to live healthier so we both joined a gym. The biggest problem is that between work, getting the kids to daycare, keeping up with the chores at home and studying, we barely have time to go to the gym at all. Hopefully we find a way to get there regularly. One last Braydenism for today. We asked him where he would like to go on vacation if he could go anywhere in the world. His response? "Grandpa Dillon's House!" |
